EMR

EMR stands for Emergency Medical Records and specifically refers to medical records stored in a digital format.  The acronym EHR (electronic health record) is also used, but generally they refer to the same thing.

Countries such as England and Canada are currently underway adopting EMR for as many of their citizens as possible.  The goal of United Kingdom’s National Health Service is to have the medical records of 60 million people archived digitally by 2010.

Organizations have been dreaming of paperless offices for many years, thinking of being earth-friendly, producing less paper waste, and saving on recycling expenses.  It is an extremely difficult endeavor to have a paperless office in any social services or medical agency due to all the documentation generated by those fields of occupation.  If you have ever seen the same doctor or dentist for many years and caught a glimpse of your file—or files—you were probably astounded by the sheer volume of paper they contained.

Paperless medical records are now a possibility for private citizens with the invention of revolutionary portable flash drives that will fit in a wallet or pocket.   As time goes on and technology advances, no doubt important records will be archived in this method more and more frequently.
